Brown's Schoolhouse, a modest wooden building once run by Methodists and Quakers, marked the beginning of Duke University's remarkable history in 1838. After fifteen years, the institution awarded its first Bachelor's degrees. Perhaps the next significant event was the school's renaming to Trinity College in 1860 because of its affiliation with the Methodist Church.
